Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
