England along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a group once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
