EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
