The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
