Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
