A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
